In the middle of the 1990s, the quirky indie-rock outfit Arlo came into existence in Los Angeles, where college students Nate Greely and Sean Spillane, both handling guitar and vocals, initially launched a project named Otto. Despite frequent changes in the rhythm section, the group managed to put out a split single through the Glimmerfed imprint before locking in bassist Shmedley and drummer Soup, each of whom had previously played in the local band Holliston Stops. Shortly after, they adopted the name Arlo to pay tribute to a beloved club soundman and secured a deal with Sub Pop in 2000. Late in that same year, a 7-inch single appeared, setting the stage for the early 2001 arrival of their first full-length effort, Up High in the Night. Another serving of pop rock followed the next year with the Sub Pop-issued Stab the Unstoppable Hero.
