Ayreon originated as the progressive metal vehicle of Dutch multi-instrumentalist, singer, songwriter, arranger and producer Arjen Anthony Lucassen, formerly of Vengeance. Each album assembles a fresh international roster of vocalists and players to enact sprawling concept narratives or metal operas in which every character receives a distinct singer. Lucassen launched the project in 1994 and issued The Final Experiment the following year. Actual Fantasy followed in 1996. The double-disc Universal Migrator arrived in 2000, its two volumes released separately as Part I: The Dream Sequencer and Part II: Flight of the Migrator, with guests that included Tiamat’s Johan Edlund, Iron Maiden’s Bruce Dickinson, members of Gamma Ray, Primal Fear, Helloween, Stratovarius and Symphony X, plus Erik Norlander and drummer Ed Warby.

Into the Electric Castle: A Space Opera appeared in 1998, fusing Greek mythology with science fiction and employing eight vocalists, among them Fish and Anneke van Giersbergen. The Human Equation (2004) shifted to medical drama inside the mind of a coma patient, incorporated symphonic strings and recruited Opeth’s Mikael Åkerfeldt, Devin Townsend and Dream Theater’s James LaBrie; Lucassen even flew Mexican singer-violinist Marcela Bovio to the sessions. The 2008 release 01011001 featured seventeen lead vocalists and explored the supposed hidden history of ASCII binary characters. The Theory of Everything emerged in 2013, its subject matter drawn from physics and inspired by the films A Beautiful Mind and Rain Man. The Source followed in 2017 as a large-scale prequel to 01011001 whose narrative occasionally employed binary-code lyrics.

Live documents include Theater Equation (2016), a filmed performance of The Human Equation with choir and orchestra, and Ayreon Universe (2018), a career-spanning concert recorded the previous year in the Netherlands. In 2019 Lucassen staged Into the Electric Castle across four nights in a Tilburg theater, reassembling original cast members including Anneke van Giersbergen, Fish, Damian Wilson and Edward Reekers; the resulting Electric Castle Live and Other Tales appeared in March 2020. That September saw the studio album Transitus, whose Victorian-era plot centers on an aristocratic patriarch played by Dee Snider, his son Daniel’s forbidden romance with servant girl Abby, assorted supernatural figures, and narration by Tom Baker.

Five sold-out concerts at Poppodium 013 in Tilburg during September 2023 presented the complete 01011001 alongside encores, performed by an expanded ensemble that included keyboardist Joost van den Broek, drummer Ed Warby, bassist Johan van Stratum, guitarists Timo Somers and Marcel Coenen, and many studio-album vocalists. The 2024 album 01011001: Live Beneath the Waves captures those shows, marking the largest live cast in Ayreon’s history.
