Biography
Caligula's Horse emerged from Brisbane in 2011 as an Australian progressive metal and alt-rock outfit known for its intense, ever-evolving sound. The band's mainstream breakthrough came via Bloom in 2015, which climbed to number 16 on the ARIA Chart while claiming top spots on numerous metal publications' annual rankings. Follow-up releases such as Rise Radiant in 2020 and Charcoal Grace in 2024 further highlighted the group's technical command and compositional depth, solidifying its reputation across progressive metal and rock circles.
The lineup, anchored by vocalist Jim Grey, lead guitarist Sam Vallen, guitarist Adrian Goleby, bassist/vocalist Dave Couper, and drummer Josh Griffin, drew early inspiration from Coheed and Cambria, Haken, Dream Theater, and Circus Maximus. Their first full-length effort, Moments from Ephemeral City, merged intricate musicianship with thoughtful arrangements. Before issuing the conceptual sophomore album The Tide, the Thief & River's End in 2013, the group put out the EP Colossus. Bloom arrived on Inside Out Music that same year, registering across multiple Australian charts and gaining traction internationally. Two years afterward came In Contact, a confident collection centered on love, art, and resistance. Rise Radiant explored legacy, survival, and self-belief with precision and force, while Charcoal Grace delved into the emotional fallout of the COVID-19 pandemic, seeking release amid the resulting social and political upheaval.
