Toronto-based duo Babygirl coined the term "bubblegum emo" for their brand of melancholic, wispy-voiced indie pop/rock. Following the 2016 release of their first EP, As You Wish, the pair sustained an intimate, yearning tone alongside a preference for unhurried melodies across the 2021 Losers Weepers EP and the 2023 Be Still My Heart EP.

Kiki Frances, born Kirsten Clark, grew up outside a musical household yet began singing and composing songs in childhood as an outlet for personal expression. Cameron Bright, born Cameron Breithaupt, was raised by a singer and a keyboardist, absorbing harmony skills during family meals. The two first crossed paths as vocal performance majors at Humber College in Toronto, where discussions of pop music soon evolved into songwriting aimed at material for other established artists. One early collaboration they especially favored, the piano ballad "Unwant You," was recorded and placed on Babygirl's debut EP. Mixed by Breithaupt and featuring six additional musicians, among them his brother Miles Breithaupt on drums, the four-track As You Wish surfaced in 2016. A follow-up EP, Lovers Fevers, arrived in 2018. After signing with Sandlot Records and landing placements on prominent streaming playlists, the duo issued their label debut, the Losers Weepers EP, in April 2021. Their next project on the imprint, Be Still My Heart, came out in April 2023 and coincided with the duo's inaugural headlining tour.
