Beardfish

Beardfish emerged from Sweden as a progressive rock outfit renowned for its instrumental precision and vigorous approach to the form. Rooted in the traditions established by Genesis and Yes, the group swiftly earned praise across art-rock and progressive-metal circles alike. From 2001 through 2015 the ensemble issued eight studio albums, then halted activity in 2016; four years later the members reconvened, delivering their ninth long-player, Songs for Beating Hearts, in 2024.

Rikard Sjöblom launched the project that year alongside guitarist David Zackrisson, bassist Gabriel Olsson, keyboardist Stefan Aronsson, and drummer Petter Diamant. Subsequent lineup shifts produced a stable quartet comprising Sjöblom, Zackrisson, drummer Magnus Östgren, and bassist Robert Hansen. The sole release to include Aronsson, Från en Plats Du Ej Kan Se, appeared in 2003; he exited the following year. After issuing The Sane Day in 2006 the remaining four-piece signed with InsideOut Music, remaining on the roster for nearly ten years and completing six further albums—Sleeping in Traffic, Part One; Sleeping in Traffic, Part Two; Destined Solitaire; Mammoth; The Void; and +4626-COMFORTZONE—that wove together heavy metal, folk, classic rock, and blues.

The band dissolved without public comment in 2016. A 2023 social-media announcement revealed plans for a festival appearance, while subsequent studio photographs indicated fresh material in progress. That work materialized as Songs for Beating Hearts, the group’s ninth album, which surfaced the next year.
