Beeda Weeda surfaced as an emerging hyphy figure across the Bay Area in the mid-2000s once Tajai of Souls of Mischief and Hieroglyphics took notice. The East Oakland, CA native had spent several prior years working exclusively as a producer, supplying beats to neighborhood friend and eventual collaborator Lil Al. After Lil Al’s incarceration, Weeda sharpened his own microphone skills to sustain momentum as a solo act. He manufactured and distributed his debut project locally throughout Oakland, where it rapidly generated esteem and eventually reached Tajai. Although Tajai’s own background lay in Hiero’s spiritual and alternative rap tradition, he identified strong potential in the hyphy rapper-producer and signed him to Clear Label Records. With “Turfs Up” receiving steady local airplay, the official debut Turfology 101 reached stores in August 2006 and advanced Weeda measurably closer to wider recognition. Later that year he earned a Best New Artist nomination at the Bay Area Music Awards.
