Biography
Multi-instrumentalist Bill Chambers spent his childhood in a remote South Australian settlement where American sounds held a lasting grip on his imagination. During adolescence he took up every stringed instrument within reach. Still enrolled in high school, he assembled his earliest group, the Deerstalkers, and sustained the lineup until responsibilities as a husband and father eclipsed his musical commitments. With his children barely past toddler age, Chambers relocated the household to a remote wilderness setting for several years, seeking distance from urban pressures and the music industry alike. Life off the grid found the family gathered nightly around campfires to sing classic country songs. Upon leaving that isolation in 1987, Chambers reentered music with renewed drive and launched the Dead Ringer Band, which included his daughter Kasey Chambers. Over the ensuing years the group performed extensively across multiple continents. Their debut album, Red Desert Sky, appeared in 1993; subsequent releases included Home Fires (1995), Living in the Circle (1997), and Hopeville (1998). By the middle of the decade, numerous awards for Chambers and the Dead Ringer Band opened doors to steady session work and production opportunities. In 1999 he began collaborating with neo-traditionalist country singer Audrey Auld, resulting in the joint album Looking Back to See that same year. Alongside Auld, Chambers established the independent imprint Reckless Records. By 2000 Kasey had launched a thriving solo career in which Bill maintained key roles both behind the console and onstage. In 2002 he constructed his personal facility, the Boneyard, and at last turned to his own debut project, Sleeping with the Blues. The record highlighted Chambers’s commitment to American country, folk, and blues traditions and earned widespread critical praise. His next EMI effort, Frozen Ground, arrived in 2006.
