The four individuals comprising the French turntablist outfit Birdy Nam Nam first encountered one another as part of the larger collective Scratch Action Hiro, which captured the 2000 DMC World DJ Team Championship. Crazy B, DJ Pone, Little Mike, and DJ Need launched Birdy Nam Nam the following year, selecting the name from a line of dialogue in the 1968 Peter Sellers film The Party. After securing the 2002 DMC World DJ Team Championship, the quartet redirected its energies toward studio production. Their self-titled debut, issued by the Uncivilized World label in 2005, was assembled solely with turntables and incorporated jazz, funk, and downtempo textures. Tours promoting the record prompted the group to develop more high-energy, dancefloor-driven material. The single "Trans Boulogne Express," which surfaced in 2007, offered listeners an early indication of the crew’s shift toward a stronger electro orientation. That track appeared on the 2009 album Manual for Successful Rioting, an effort on which the four members programmed and performed synths in tandem with their turntables.
