Black Lab came together as an alternative rock group in the Bay Area during 1995, built around vocalist Paul Durham, bassist Geoff Stanfield, guitarist Michael Belfer, and drummer Bryan Head. After adopting the name Black Lab, the four musicians quickly earned enthusiastic notices throughout San Francisco and secured a contract with Geffen Records in 1996. Their first full-length release, Your Body Above Me, arrived in October 1997. Time Ago appeared the following year, yet the original lineup disbanded in 1999. Durham revived the Black Lab name after Epic signed the project in 2000 and began working with guitarist and programmer Andy Ellis. One song landed on the Spider-Man soundtrack, though the pair parted ways with Epic prior to the 2005 self-release of their second album, See the Sun. Additional tracks turned up on the soundtracks for Varsity Blues, The Shield, Blade Trinity, and Buffy the Vampire Slayer. The duo issued Passion Leaves a Trace in early 2007. Two collections of B-sides, Technologie and Give Us Sugar, came next, followed by the studio album Two Strangers in 2010.
