Biography
Blood from the Soul took shape in the early 1990s when Napalm Death’s Shane Embury assembled the project around a punishing fusion of grindcore, punk, and industrial metal. Seeking to move beyond their main bands, Embury and Sick of It All’s Lou Koller issued the debut album To Spite the Gland That Breeds in 1993. The record fused unrelenting hardcore and punk with the sturm and drang of industrial metal, helping launch a fresh wave of the style alongside like-minded acts such as Godflesh, Meathook Seed, Scorn, and Pitch Shifter. After years of inactivity Embury revived the group in 2020, delivering the ambitious sci-fi concept album DSM-5 with a formidable lineup that featured vocalist and lyricist Jacob Bannon of Converge, drummer Dirk Verbeuren of At the Gates, Soilwork, and Megadeth, and bassist Jesper Liveröd of Nasum.
