Biography
Phobia emerged in 1990 from Orange County, California, intent on exposing the darkness beneath the region’s glossy surface and extending that outlook to every corner of the globe. The grindcore/crust-punk group began with vocalist Shane McLachlan—who also handles guitar, bass, and drums in the studio when required—alongside guitarists Bruce Reeves and Zach Southall and drummer Marco Soriano, marking the first of numerous configurations. Despite frequent membership shifts, the band maintained an unbroken cycle of tours and releases that carried them across the United States, Europe, and additional territories, yielding countless singles and EPs plus a string of concise yet densely packed albums: Means of Existence in 1998, Serenity Through Pain in 2001, Grind Your Fucking Head In in 2003, Cruel in 2006, and 22 Random Acts of Violence in 2008. By 2010 the lineup had settled around McLachlan, guitarist Steve Burda, bassist Calum MacKenzie, and drummer Bryan Fajardo; the quartet reconnected with their original home, Relapse Records, and delivered the EP Unrelenting. The full-length Remnants of Filth followed in 2012, the Grindcore EP appeared in 2014, and the expansive four-disc compilation Decades of Blastphemy arrived in 2017. The politically charged Lifeless God surfaced the next year on Willowtip.
