Biography
Since 1994 the grindcore unit Agoraphobic Nosebleed has operated under shifting lineups, always steered by Scott Hull on guitar, bass, and drum programming—the same musician known from Pig Destroyer and an earlier stint in A.C. The group’s bleak, punishing approach fuses caustic vocals with harsh, inhumanly fast drum-machine rhythms and Hull’s Earache-schooled riffing. Tracks stay brief and dense, most lasting under a minute. Their lyrics mirror the band’s cryptic name and titles such as “Chalking the Temporal God Module,” “The Fatter You Fall Behind,” and “Lives Ruined Through Sex,” exploring crackpot apocalypse theories, homophobia and misogyny, drug conspiracies, mind control, rampant capitalism and consumerism, and bio-terrorism through ambiguous, free-associative phrasing laced with tasteless scatological outbursts that sometimes tilt toward humor.
After several split and EP releases plus further personnel changes, the 26-song, 19-minute debut full-length Honky Reduction appeared in 1998 on Relapse Records, captured by Hull alongside vocalist and electronics manipulator Jay Randall. The next year brought the 6" EP PCP Tornado and the split CD The Poacher Diaries with Boston, MA, hardcore band Converge; for the latter, second vocalist J.R. Hayes—also frontman of Pig Destroyer—was added. The long-awaited second album, Frozen Corpse Stuffed With Dope, finally surfaced in 2002, again via Relapse. Hull and Randall were now joined by vocalist Carl Schultz and bassist/vocalist Richard Johnson, previously of Enemy Soil and The Index and an early Agoraphobic Nosebleed member. Guest vocals came from Hayes plus participants from Benumb, Necrophagia, Cephalic Carnage, and Brutal Truth.
