Singer and bassist Blu DeTiger crafts arty indie pop steeped in funk and disco traditions. Her initial attention arrived in 2017 through DJ sets where she layered her own funky bass lines over records, an approach that paved the way for original material such as the 2020 tracks “Figure It Out” and “Cotton Candy Lemonade.” Both cuts later appeared on her March 2021 EP How Did We Get Here?, which was followed by further singles including 2022’s “Hot Crush Lover.” The full realization of her melodic electro-funk sound surfaced with the 2024 debut album All I Ever Want Is Everything.

Raised in Manhattan, DeTiger is the daughter of sculptor and painter Jonny Detiger. She began studying bass at age seven and continued with rock and jazz theory instruction throughout her youth. During her teenage years she drew influence from classic funk acts including Cameo, Prince, and Zapp while receiving guidance from players such as Jerry Barnes of Nile Rodgers and Chic and Steven Wolf, known for work with Alicia Keys and P!NK. She soon started DJing across New York, earning notice for simultaneously spinning tracks and improvising bass grooves over them. That reputation led to tours supporting Caroline Polachek, Kitten, and the Knocks.

DeTiger’s own recordings also began attracting listeners, starting with 2019’s “In My Head.” Additional online visibility came when footage of her playing bass over Megan Thee Stallion’s “Savage” circulated widely. Around the same period she issued the laid-back single “Figure It Out,” then followed it in October 2020 with “Cotton Candy Lemonade.” These two songs formed the core of her debut EP How Did We Get Here?, released in March 2021. Bass Player magazine placed her on its cover and called her the “future of bass.” After signing with Capitol Records she released the single “Blondes,” which preceded “Hot Crush Lover” in 2022. The 2024 album All I Ever Want Is Everything arrived next, featuring songwriting contributions from Uffie, Chappell Roan, Mayer Hawthorne, and others along with guest spots from Mallrat on “Cut Me Down” and Magdalena Bay on “Disappearing.”
