Bluey Robinson, a singer born in Sweden but raised in England, stepped onto the scene in 2011 projecting the persona of a lively vintage soul equipped with a fresh sonic approach drawn from an eclectic array of influences that encompassed the Jackson 5, Cee Lo Green, and Bruno Mars. Music and theatrical performances occupied his childhood, culminating in a turn as Simba alongside future pop figures Jessie J and Rochelle Wiseman of the Saturdays in a staging of The Lion King. He assembled a band that secured an appearance in a 2004 installment of EastEnders, yet the lineup soon ejected him with the advice that his prospects lay in solo work. Undeterred, he linked up with the then-emerging producer Labrinth; their joint sessions yielded abundant material, after which Robinson turned to YouTube. A posting of the track “I Know” gained traction and attracted the attention of Ryan Leslie, who supplied a remix. Heightened online visibility secured a deal with Sony, for whom he issued the initial singles “Showgirl” and “Coming Back” in 2011.
