Not to be confused with the American sausage tycoon or the country performer Jimmy Dean, Bob Evans actually served as the solo moniker for Kevin Mitchell, the lead singer of Australian indie pop outfit Jebediah. Mitchell, who entered the world in Perth on October 1, 1976, helped launch Jebediah in 1994, selecting the name to pay tribute to Jebediah Springfield, the made-up originator of Springfield, U.S.A. from The Simpsons. The group claimed victory in Australia’s yearly National Campus Band Competition toward the end of 1995, which secured them a slot at the Summersault Music Festival the next year. Through successful albums such as Twitch in 1996 and Of Someday Shambles in 1999, Jebediah rose to become one of the country’s most prominent young acts, prompting Mitchell to release his debut Bob Evans effort, Suburban Kid, in 2004 and reveal a more personal, roots-oriented side to his compositions. He revived the Bob Evans endeavor in 2006 with Suburban Songbook, which appeared on the major imprint Capitol after being tracked in Nashville under the guidance of producer Brad Jones.
