Biography
Born in Brisbane on August 15, 1969, Bernard Fanning first gained widespread recognition as the frontman of Powderfinger, the Australian rock band that dominated the charts throughout the 1990s and early 2000s. He entered the group at the invitation of Ian Haug, a fellow student from St. Joseph’s College economics class who had established Powderfinger two years earlier in 1989. Although initially recruited to play guitar, Fanning quickly assumed lead vocal duties, steering the ensemble away from cover material toward original compositions.
Following two independent EPs, the band—named after the Neil Young track from Rust Never Sleeps—secured a deal with Polydor in 1994 and delivered its first full-length release, Parables for Wooden Ears. The 1996 album Double Allergic earned double-platinum status in Australia, launching a run of number-one records that included Internationalist in 1998, Odyssey Number Five in 2000, and Vulture Street in 2003. That same year Fanning made his acting debut in the film Ned Kelly while also contributing a solo track to its soundtrack. Despite touring success in Britain and Europe, Powderfinger never broke through in the United States, prompting the group to enter a hiatus in 2005.
Fanning launched his solo career that October with Tea & Sympathy, an album that leaned toward folk and singer-songwriter styles yet produced the hit singles “Wish You Well” and “Songbird.” He paused solo work to rejoin Powderfinger for the 2007 release Dream Days at the Hotel Existence, which topped the Australian charts. The band also embarked on an extensive tour alongside Silverchair called Across the Great Divide, intended to raise awareness of indigenous issues. Their final album, Golden Rule, arrived in 2009 and again reached number one before the group disbanded.
After several years devoted to songwriting and family life, Fanning returned in 2013 with Departures, a rock-oriented effort that promptly claimed the top spot on the Australian album chart. Civil Dusk, issued in 2016, revisited the folk approach of his debut solo record and once more ascended to number one, remaining in the Top Ten for more than a month.
