The project known as Bright Light Bright Light originated with folk singer Rod Thomas and operates as an electro-pop outfit shaped by the sounds of Kate Bush, Depeche Mode, and Ace of Base. Raised across a pair of villages in the South Wales valleys, Thomas mastered multiple instruments in childhood before busking throughout the London Underground during his teenage years. Several singles appeared under his own name on the Self Raising Records imprint he founded in 2006, after which he launched Bright Light Bright Light, taking the name from a line of dialogue in Gremlins. Material developed alongside Boom Bip and Andy Chatterley (Kylie Minogue) led to support slots on U.K. tours by Marina & the Diamonds and the Noisettes, plus remixes for Ellie Goulding and Nerina Pallot. An early signee to the Popjustice Hi-Fi label, the act issued its debut album Make Me Believe in Hope in 2012, which included the single "Love, Pt. 2." The follow-up Life Is Easy arrived in 2014 after Thomas relocated to New York and marked his initial chart placements in both the U.K. and the U.S. Increased visibility attracted the interest of Elton John, who took on a mentoring role and guested on the 2016 album Choreography. Thomas’s most ambitious and introspective work to that point, the record delivered bright, technicolor pop shaped by an affinity for the music and films of the 1980s and 1990s while also featuring contributions from Scissor Sisters and actor Alan Cumming.
