Biography
Kingston producer Colin "Bulby" Youkat, who also records under the name Bulby York, began his independent path in 2016 after years as part of the Fat Eyes collective. He and Lynford "Fatta" Marshall established the dancehall production outfit Fat Eyes early in the 1990s, each already seasoned behind the console through sessions with Sly & Robbie, Black Uhuru, Beenie Man, and Culture. Late in that decade Beres Hammond began relying on the pair almost exclusively, prompting a run of inventive riddims—Renegade, Candle Wax, and Living Colours—that surfaced on their own imprint. The tracks often reworked older material, whether reshaping a Melodians classic or blending a snippet of Beethoven with a D'Angelo piano motif. By 2002 the duo had narrowed their focus to production work, and after their contribution to Sean Paul's "Punkie" propelled 1.5 million sales of the album Dutty Rock they became in-demand names. Heartbeat Records soon entered a partnership with them, resulting in the 2003 release Fat Eyes Presents a Dancehall Twofer: Fat Eyes Deelite and Dancehall Attack, which combined two earlier compilations with a fresh set of recordings titled Dancehall Deelite.
The team appeared on the 2011 Soul Jazz collection Invasion of the Killer Mysteron Sounds, and further riddims such as Sizzurp, Luv Me Luv Me, and Youths a Live Up carried the partnership into 2015, when York stepped away to pursue solo projects. Seeking to translate the sound of EDM albums by David Guetta and Calvin Harris into dancehall, he issued the 2016 album Epic & Ting, which included appearances by Sizzla, Maxi Priest, Bounty Killer, Lee "Scratch" Perry, and additional guests. In September 2018 York delivered Master Blaster through VP, an eleven-track set spanning roots, rock steady reggae, dancehall, hip-hop, and Afrobeat with contributions from Beenie Man, Beres Hammond, Patrice Roberts, Marcia Griffiths, and others.
