Byul.org operates as a South Korean collective engaged in graphic design, fashion, art direction, branding, software development, and experimental pop music. Originally called Byul—the Korean word for “star”—the group launched in 2000 before adopting the Byul.org name to avoid confusion with a K-pop performer who already used the shorter title. Its core participants—creative director TaeSang Cho alongside Yu Hur, Jowall, YunYi Yi, and SuhnJoo Yi—first gathered as drinking companions, then broadened their activities to generate and record as many projects as possible. Music initially appeared alongside the collective’s art magazine Monthly Vampire and on its own imprint Club Bidanbaem; wider international notice followed the score the group supplied for the 2001 film Take Care of My Cat. That exposure eventually reached Burnt Toast Vinyl, which reached out in 2005 to propose the release of Byul.org’s debut proper album. The double album Secret Stories Heard from a Girl in an Opium Den finally surfaced in 2012, gathering more than ten years of material. After focusing on separate endeavors, the collective resurfaced in 2017 with Selected Tracks for Nacht Damonen, a compilation TaeSang Cho assembled together with Markus Acher of The Notwist.
