Formed in Orlando during 1997, C Note emerged after Jose "Brody" Martinez, Raul Molina, and David "D'Lo" Perez lost two members from their existing vocal ensemble. Facing an imminent talent show, the remaining trio brought in Andrew "Dru" Rogers to round out their vocal blend. Their winning showcase drew interest from Transcontinental Records—the same company that had propelled multi-platinum acts such as the Backstreet Boys and N'Sync—leading to an immediate recording contract for the quartet.

C Note merges fashion, vocals, and choreography in the manner of its earlier label peers, yet the members’ varied backgrounds lend an unmistakable Latin dimension to both image and music. Martinez, originally from Puerto Rico, relocated to Orlando during childhood; Molina entered the world in the Dominican Republic; and Perez, raised in New Jersey by parents of Cuban and Puerto Rican descent, joined the others in performing and dancing throughout their youth. Rogers, a lifelong Orlando resident, discovered his singing voice only as a high-school senior after realizing its appeal to young women. Throughout 1998 the group refined its material with leading producers including Full Force while appearing on stages nationwide, readying the multicultural charisma showcased on its first album, A Different Kind of Love, issued in 1999.
