Biography
Born Donald Sharp and Tiyon Rogers, respectively, the pair who perform as Cadillac Don & J-Money first absorbed blues and R&B while growing up in Crawford, MS, before rap’s harder edge began to dominate their listening. College baseball scholarships took both of them onto campus, yet an injury ended J-Money’s shot at professional tryouts, whereas Cadillac Don chose to teach high-school art. They kept writing rhymes on the side until local producer Big Fruit entered the picture and the two decided to operate as a duo. The resulting single “Peanut Butter & Jelly” attracted Asylum Records, a Warner imprint, which offered Cadillac Don & J-Money a distribution deal in 2006 while the track picked up further radio spins; that November the duo’s debut album, Look at Me—shaped by the sound of Ying Yang Twins and UGK—appeared.
