The trio behind Chambao—vocalist La Mari together with El Edi and Dani—introduced flamenco chill to international listeners by merging the fiery delivery and emotional depth of traditional Andalusian flamenco with chillout-oriented electronica. The group coalesced in Málaga, Spain, during the predawn hours of the 2001 summer solstice. Their first widespread exposure arrived via the 2002 Sony anthology Flamenco Chill, which featured eight Chambao tracks showcasing Mari’s lead vocals alongside instrumental support from the other two members. Their proper debut album, Endorfinas en la Mente, emerged two years later under the guidance of Italian electronica specialist Bob Benozzo. The follow-up, Pokito a Poko, appeared the next year, although Dani’s contributions were minimal after he exited before recording wrapped. Once the Pokito a Poko tour ended, Edi likewise departed, leaving Mari as the sole remaining original member. Following her successful recovery from breast cancer, the singer resumed live performances and studio work with Chambao, now backed by a fresh seven-piece ensemble. Their fourth studio album, Con Otro Aire, surfaced in 2007; La Mari directed its composition, arrangements, and production, weaving audible threads of her African and Mexican influences throughout. Five years afterward the band issued its self-titled fifth album, enlisting Carlos Raya (Fito & Fitipaldis, M-Clan) as producer. His refined touch enhanced the group’s atmospheric fusion of flamenco and electronic textures.
