Led by visionary pop musician Miguel Campello on vocals, the Spanish fusion outfit Elbicho rose from street-level performances to claim spots atop European charts. Guitarist Victor Iniesta, bassist Carlos Tato, drummer Toni Mangas, percussionist David Amores, flutist Juan Carlos Aracil, keyboardist Mario Díaz, and trumpeter Pepe Andreu united to fulfill Campello’s concept of merging rhumba, funk, rock, and jazz. The six founding members excluding Díaz first crossed paths as students at Madrid’s Escuela Popular de Música in September 2001. Busking in public spaces allowed them to sharpen their distinctive blend and shape an ambition to stretch the conventions of Spanish popular music. Anchored in the flamenco heritage of their homeland, the group wove in Afro-Cuban rhythms, hip-hop elements, and further pop influences, quickly earning recognition as one of Madrid’s most refined and daring pop ensembles. Just two years after forming, they issued their debut album Elbicho via WEA International. Its globally tinged approach, accomplished playing, and lively stage presence established the band as a club favorite across the country. Their follow-up, Elbicho II, arrived in 2005 and widened their audience inside Spain while leaving the wider world-music market largely untouched. The third release, Elbicho VII, reached European listeners with impact in 2007, swiftly entering Billboard’s European Top 100 and securing the group international attention.
