Macaco, who had previously performed as Dani Darbonell with Magia Animal, Dr. No, and Ojos de Brujo, aligned himself with La Hermandad Chirusa, an ensemble assembled from accomplished players across Argentina, Colombia, Brazil, and Spain. Their partnership yielded his initial solo outing, a fusion of rap, rhumba, pop, funk, and reggae issued by Edel in 1999 under the title El Mono en el Ojo del Tigre and containing the track “Veraveraboom,” which David Byrne later reworked. Over the subsequent decade Macaco maintained collaborations with a wide array of musicians, channeling reggae, rap, electronica, and world music into the albums Rumbo Submarino (2001), Entre Raíces y Antenas (2004), Ingravitto (2006), Puerto Presente (2009), and the greatest-hits set El Vecindario (2010). He followed these projects with El Murmullo del Fuego in 2012, once more affirming that the group’s inventive energy remained undiminished.
