Biography
Charlene Soraia, recognized as an alternative folk performer, came into being and spent her early years in the London Borough of Lewisham. At five years of age, her father's guitar captured her attention. Her creative pursuits later grew to encompass singing and songwriting, inspired by a growing admiration for progressive rock outfits including King Crimson and Pink Floyd, in addition to David Bowie and the Beatles. Admission to the BRIT School, otherwise known as The London School for Performing Arts & Technology, placed her in the same environment as up-and-coming artists Adele and Kate Nash. She performed with two bands during this period, yet neither managed to secure notable attention. Several minimalist solo EPs appeared between 2006 and 2009, such as Lemonade in 2006, Postcards from iO in 2008, Daffodils & Other Idylls also in 2008, and One of the Sun in 2009. A dreamy rendition of the Calling's "Wherever You Will Go" from 2011 found placement in a Twinings tea commercial. The Peacefrog label put out this track as a single near the close of September, propelling it to the Top Five on the U.K. singles chart. That November witnessed the launch of her initial album, titled Moonchild.
