Biography
Jonathan Valentine, the British electronic artist recording as Chevron, creates music spanning a broad array of post-rave genres. Attention first came his way through Planet Mu output highlighted by the 2005 debut album Everything's Exactly the Same, after which his focus shifted from buoyant laptop-driven IDM and breakcore toward more contemplative strains of acid and electro heard on efforts such as Good Morning Britain in 2018. Live performances rely on an all-hardware rig, leading to bills alongside Venetian Snares, Hardfloor, and Ceephax Acid Crew, while he has also become a fixture at I Love Acid nights and the yearly Bangface Weekender Festival.
Valentine grew up in Blackpool, where he regularly attended raves and first experimented with techno production as a student. The move to Brighton came in 2003, the same year he joined Mike Paradinas' Planet Mu roster and issued the debut single "Swimmin' Lessons," also sharing stages with labelmates Venetian Snares and Shitmat. Everything's Exactly the Same, a high-energy blend of accelerated jungle and IDM, followed in 2005. Limited tour-only releases and various compilation appearances came next, culminating in the 2007 happy hardcore throwback EP Rave Like a Bastard on Shitmat's Wrong Music label, credited to Chevron and Oen Flux as Chevvers & Fluxxy. Ad Noiseam then put out the rave-inflected breakcore EP Tuff Shite in 2008.
A turn toward acid techno brought the EP BN1 4GB via netlabel Acroplane Recordings in 2009. The self-released album Obstacles arrived in 2012, its tracks drawing from chiptune through to bhangra influences. Remixes by Mark Archer (Altern 8), Luke Vibert, and DMX Krew appeared on the next EP. Planet Mu digitally released Lifeshake in 2015, gathering material originally planned for a 2007 second album. Two further full-lengths, Possibilities on Balkan Recordings and Tintagel House on Acid Waxa, both surfaced in 2016. Bulk Dump, an extensive collection of compilation tracks and remixes, followed in 2017. Icelandic label Möller Records issued a split 7" single with Futuregrapher in early 2018, while Shipwrec and Love Love Records respectively released the albums Memory Disks. Volume One. and Good Morning Britain the same year. Another Memory Disks. installment, a Balkan split single with Posthuman, and a double 12" for Berlin's Chemistry Radio all appeared in 2019. Early 2020 saw Futuregrapher's Móatún 7 imprint release a split single pairing Chevron with Púlsvídd.
