Cimorelli

Cimorelli emerged as an online phenomenon after the Sacramento, California sextet posted an a cappella take on Miley Cyrus’ “Party in the USA,” a style rooted in their early immersion in Jackson 5 records, teen-pop singles, and Glee soundtracks. The all-sister, home-schooled lineup—Christina, Katherine, Lisa, Amy, Lauren, and Dani Cimorelli—first assembled in 2007. Their mother, music major, composer, and choir director Lynne Cimorelli, began teaching each girl an instrument and vocal technique between the ages of two and four, fostering the group’s precise harmonies and unison phrasing.

In 2008 the band issued its self-titled debut album. One year later, Sugababes manager Sarah Stennett signed on, securing a Universal contract that yielded the 2011 CimFam EP, a collection of covers spotlighting material by Jessie J, One Direction, and Demi Lovato. Subsequent EPs followed in quick succession: Believe It in 2012, Made in America in 2013, and Renegade in 2014, alongside a split single issued with singer-songwriter Tyler Ward. Late in 2014 the sisters unveiled Christmas Magic, an a cappella set of seasonal standards. Their second full-length, Up at Night, arrived in 2016 and introduced country inflections to their polished pop sound; the crowd-funded Sad Girls Club appeared the next year.
