Biography
In 2003, Madison, Wisconsin gave rise to the instrumental rock group Cougar, whose layered yet approachable approach earned the self-applied tag "emergency rock." Trent Johnson, Dan Venne, D.H. Skogen, Aaron Sleator, and Todd Hill make up the quintet, whose résumés include performances alongside acts such as the YoungBlood Brass Band. The musicians coalesced around informal jam sessions and conversations on music; their first album, Law, was recorded and mixed by John McEntire and received comparisons to outfits like Explosions in the Sky. Layered issued Law throughout Europe and the U.K. in 2006, while ACM brought the record to American audiences the following spring.
