Danny Zelonky had already logged several years releasing material as Low Res across imprints like Plug Research, Metroplex, and Sony before adopting the alias Crank for a 1999 debut album under the new name. A contract with Mille Plateaux Records enabled the appearance of Wanton Phenomena, whose production incorporated electronic samples and techno overtones. Heftibag arrived before the year ended.
