Born around 1973 in Kingston, Jamaica, Dawnette Nevers first revealed her musical gifts while attending Alpha Academy, yet her foster parents urged her toward steady employment as a sales representative. Treating performance as little more than a pastime, she drew strong inspiration from Michael Jackson, performing his material for classmates and copying the star’s wardrobe. The habit earned her local fame as Jamaica’s endearing copy of the self-styled King of Pop.

A relative arranged an introduction to Danny Browne of the Bloodfire Posse, who had already noticed her backing vocals during an anonymous Kingston session where he worked as an engineer. Struck by her voice, Browne offered a partnership that would last for years; he convinced her to abandon her day job, after which she joined his newly opened Main Street studio and became a member of the Main Street Crew. Early guidance there arrived from General Degree, Junior Tucker, and Lady G.

As part of that circle she contributed to Browne’s Japanese productions, appearing on the Overheat label’s Super Reggae Mix series and recording several cover versions that prepared her for solo work. In 1996 she visited Japan for concerts in four cities, opening for Thriller U. Upon returning she cut the duets “Provide The Wine” with Lady G and “Physical Attraction” with Richie Stephens, both of which led to a warmly received appearance at Reggae Sumfest. Observers noted not only her ability but also a stage presence seldom seen locally in recent years.

A subsequent collaboration with Goofy on the coupling “Hot Stuff” / “Hot Gal” placed her among Jamaica’s most promising young acts. Wider notice came when she joined Red Rat for “Nuh Live Nuh Weh,” a dancehall adaptation of “The Lion Sleeps Tonight.” In 1999 she reunited with Goofy for his debut album I Don’t Give a Damn, prominently featuring her reinterpretation of Sister Sledge’s “Frankie” titled “Goofy Laugh.” The following year she teamed again with Lady G and the B15 Project for the UK Top 10 single “Girls Like Us.”
