Born in Brooklyn, the trio featured baritone singer Jay Siegel, born on 20 October 1939, along with brothers Phil Margo on bass vocals, born 1 April 1942, and Mitch Margo handling tenor, born 25 May 1947. Having previously formed three-quarters of the 1960s ensemble known as the Tokens, the group—following the 1970 departure of founding member Hank Medress—adopted the moniker Cross Country. In October 1973, they climbed to the US Top 30 via a harmonized rendition of Wilson Pickett’s 1965 soul hit ‘In The Midnight Hour’. One year after that success, the act dissolved, shifting focus to production and songwriting roles, with Phil in particular turning toward cinema through acting parts and screenplay contributions.
