Current Swell came together in 2005 as a Canadian roots-rock band based in Victoria, British Columbia, built around the core talents of Scott Stanton, Dave Lang, Ghosty Boy, and Chris Petersen. The quartet draws from an eclectic mix that includes blues-rock, folk, surf, indie rock, reggae, and ska, prompting comparisons to Jack Johnson and Blitzen Trapper as well as Xavier Rudd and the Black Keys. Starting at the grassroots level, the group cultivated its audience through performances at house shows, beaches, and any location the wind carried them, while simultaneously cultivating a robust online presence that attracted loyal followers both at home and abroad. Their first studio album, So I Say, appeared in 2005, with Trust Us Now arriving two years later and Protect Your Own following in 2009; the last of these yielded the hit single “Young and Able.” Long Time Ago, issued in 2012, marked the band’s initial worldwide release and triggered an international tour that included festival appearances across Europe and Australia. Ulysses, released in 2014, was produced by Nathan Sabatino (Dr. Dog, White Rabbits) at Vancouver’s Greenhouse Studios and included the single “Rollin’.” When to Talk and When to Listen, the band’s fifth overall release and third for Nettwerk Records, was tracked in Nashville and Vancouver under Grammy-winning producer Jacquire King (Tom Waits, Kings of Leon, Norah Jones) and surfaced in early 2017.
