Brixton-based R&B/neo-soul artist Daniel Caplen, performing under the alias D/C, draws from both earlier eras and current trends to shape his distinctive gravelly vocals paired with unconventional production choices. Born in London during 1992 to a Caribbean mother and English father, Caplen showed an early passion for music. By his early teens he had already become proficient on piano and cello, which soon sparked a fascination with production techniques and remixing. A temporary relocation from England to study in Portland, Oregon, further shaped his artistic direction. In 2014 he issued his first project independently, the EP Epiphany, which drew interest from Atlantic Records and led to a signing the next year. Backed by the label, Caplen prepared fresh recordings in 2016, releasing the single “Longing for You” as part of his Atlantic debut EP Badman. The following year brought wider recognition through three new tracks: the collaboration “Flat Champagne” with Ray BLK, plus “My Hood” and “Two Fingers.” Caplen opened 2018 with a guest appearance on Rudimental’s “These Days,” joined by Jess Glynne and Macklemore, before unveiling the winter single “4am” featuring Caitlyn Scarlet.
