Biography
Dancefloor queen Dannii Minogue is an Australian pop star, actress, designer, model, and activist whose club-friendly fare secured her the U.K. record for consecutive number one dance singles by a female artist. After launching her career in 1990 with the gold-certified Love and Kisses, she accumulated multiple chart hits across the years, among them the '90s releases "This Is It" and "All I Wanna Do" as well as the 2000s standouts "Put the Needle on It" and "I Begin to Wonder," both drawn from 2003's Neon Nights. Songs from the subsequent Club Disco maintained her chart presence even as she shifted focus to her role as a judge on The X Factor UK. Through the early 2010s she remained active via compilations, reissues, and standalone singles before staging a musical return in 2015 with "Summer of Love" and the duet "100 Degrees" alongside her sister Kylie. Entering the 2020s, she put out tracks such as "We Could Be the One" and "Thinking 'Bout Us," the latter a collaboration with Sydney-based DJ and producer Autone.
Born in Melbourne, Australia in 1971, Minogue began vocal and dance training in childhood and, at age seven, secured a role on the Australian series Skyways. Her next step took her to Young Talent Time, the teen variety show modeled closely after The Mickey Mouse Club; she joined the cast album issued in 1985 and received a solo feature on one track. Though she departed the program in 1988, public visibility continued when proceeds from her DANNII clothing line opened doors elsewhere. The following year she secured a deal with Mushroom Records while appearing on the soap opera Home & Away. Her first single, "Love & Kisses," surfaced in 1990 and reached the Top Ten in both Australia and the U.K.; it anchored the debut album Love and Kisses—the international title given to the reissue of Australia's self-titled Dannii—a set of pop/rock and dance material that attained gold status before her twenty-first birthday.
A 1992 remix collection followed, after which Minogue devoted the remainder of the decade to dance-focused albums (1993's Get into You and 1997's Girl), television hosting duties on Top of the Pops and The Big Breakfast, and roles in film and theater. Further musical achievements arrived in the 2000s when the 2001 single "Who Do You Love Now?" topped America's dance charts; its parent album Neon Nights matched that success in the U.K., prompting her crowning as "Queen of the Clubs." The digital arrival of Club Disco in 2007 reinforced the title, coinciding with her appointment as a judge on Australia's Got Talent and The X Factor UK. Music resumed in 2015 when she unveiled "Summer of Love" live at the Sydney Gay & Lesbian Mardi Gras and recorded "100 Degrees" for her sister's holiday album Kylie Christmas. She ended the decade with "Holding On" featuring Jason Heerah and "Galaxy." At the start of the 2020s Minogue delivered a refreshed take on the early hit "All I Wanna Do 2020," followed by "We Could Be the One" and "Thinking 'Bout Us" with Autone; the reissue Neon Nights 20 appeared in June 2023.
