Biography
Led by guitarist and vocalist Emperor Nattasett, Darkwoods My Betrothed played a key role in introducing the black metal style across Scandinavia. The ensemble originated in spring 1993 under the name Virgin's Cunt and has sustained a focus on lyrics concerning ancestors and Norse gods, paired with intense, high-powered arrangements that the members themselves label "Viking metal."
While still operating as Virgin's Cunt, they tracked their opening demo Reborn In The Promethean Flame, then adopted the title Darkwoods My Betrothed ahead of completing the follow-up demo Dark Aureoles Gathering in winter 1994. The underground community responded positively, prompting South Korea-based Hammerheart Productions to offer the band a recording contract.
Issued in late 1995, the debut album Heirs Of The Northstar displayed a clear departure from the earlier demos. Rather than extending the bleak, somber character of those recordings, Darkwoods My Betrothed pursued a more atmospheric approach with new age overtones.
On their 1996 follow-up Autumn Roars Thunder, the group returned to its initial direction by emphasizing vigorous, fast-paced material. Recorded in 1997 and issued twelve months afterward, the third album Witch-Hunts stands as the band's most somber effort. Although bassist Haxenmeister exited the lineup in summer 1996, he has continued contributing to songwriting.
