Born in the United States to Iraqi heritage, Dauwd Al Hilali grew up in Wales before establishing himself in London, England, as a producer. His work blends house, garage, and techno into densely textured, often oneiric atmospheres equally at home on dancefloors or in domestic settings. Pictures issued his debut EP, What's There, in November 2011. March 2013 brought Heat Division, a four-track release shared by Pictures and Ghostly International. Kompakt simultaneously put out his remix of Coma’s “My Orbit.” He sustained the link with the Cologne label by delivering the Kindlinn EP the following April. Further remix commissions arrived from Jack Dixon (“Lose Myself”), Lanterns on the Lake (“Not Going Back to the Harbour”), and Olaf Stuut (“Siren”). After two additional Kompakt EPs, Saleh and Jupiter George, plus a 2015 appearance on the Ghostly Swim 2 compilation, Dauwd remained largely inactive until his first album. Ninja Tune’s Technicolour sublabel released Theory of Colours in 2017, a set of seven hazy pieces shaped chiefly by vintage synthesizers.
