Biography
Amie Miriello fronts the pop/rock band Dirtie Blonde. Raised in Stamford, Connecticut, she developed an early passion for music, beginning with musical theater performances at age six and starting to compose original material by fourth grade. Her initial influences came from classic rock acts such as Jimi Hendrix, the Beatles, and Led Zeppelin, after which she gravitated toward singer/songwriters including Jeff Buckley, Joni Mitchell, and Ani DiFranco. Viewing formal education as irrelevant to her ambitions of stardom, she left traditional schooling at 15 to attend an arts-focused boarding program near Boston. There she devoted her days to singing and independently learned guitar.
During one summer she formed a friendship with guitarist Jay Dmuchowski, and the pair soon established a tight creative partnership through collaborative songwriting. At 17 she relocated to New York, where she withdrew from the New School for Jazz and Contemporary Music to devote herself entirely to writing. While tending bar on evenings when she was not performing at venues like Arlene's Grocery, Miriello continued to play shows throughout the city alongside Dmuchowski. An impromptu solo support slot one evening caught the attention of a talent scout working with producer Billy Mann, who had originally come to see another act.
At that stage Dirtie Blonde comprised only Miriello and Dmuchowski; the duo was then connected with the MachoPsycho production team responsible for work with Pink and Jessica Simpson, leading to the completion of their debut album in under two weeks. A recording contract with Jive Records had already been secured by the time the lineup expanded to include Los Angeles-based guitarist Sean Kipe, bassist Dean Moore, and drummer Tim Perez. Dirtie Blonde's self-titled debut album arrived in May 2006, after which the group toured throughout the spring, serving as opening act for Teddy Geiger and INXS.
