Cheyenne Kimball, a Texas-born singer and songwriter, composed her very first tune at eight years old simply to escape punishment. After being sent to her bedroom for a sharp remark aimed at her older sister, she produced an apologetic number titled "All I Want Is You." The experience sparked a daily habit of heartfelt writing that defined her early years. By age twelve she had taught herself acoustic guitar and built a catalog of nearly two hundred songs while simultaneously honing her stage presence through self-booked appearances at clubs across north central Texas. National attention followed in 2003 when she won top honors on the NBC series America’s Most Talented Kid. Sony/Epic Records responded by offering her a multi-album contract that same year, after which she began work on her debut record. Bassist Brad Smith and guitarist Christopher Thorn, both formerly of Blind Melon, contributed to the California sessions, an opportunity that thrilled Kimball because the band’s self-titled debut had served as a major inspiration. As she juggled ordinary teenage life with the demands of a major-label career, MTV captured the process in the reality series The Cheyenne, which premiered in spring 2006 and helped build excitement for the album and its lead single, “Hanging On.” Her song “One Original Thing” also landed on the soundtrack for the teen film Aquamarine. The long-awaited debut, The Day Has Come, reached stores in July.
