Dutch/Slovakian outfit Distant fuses chugging riffs, machine-gun drumming, and guttural screams into a sound that merges slamming brutal metal with deathcore. The group first surfaced in 2014 and has since released three full-length albums—Tyrannotophia in 2019, Aeons of Oblivion in 2021, and Heritage in 2023—while also issuing numerous singles and EPs.

Guitarist Nouri Yetgin and bassist Elmer Maurits founded the band in Rotterdam that same year. They deliberately stepped outside the local hardcore-dominated scene by pursuing their own fusion of deathcore and metal, gradually constructing an audience from the ground up. The early lineup also included guitarist Gene Troust and drummer Shainel Ramharakh. Their first single, “Gallant,” surfaced in 2014, followed a year later by the double A-side “Slither/2K15.” After Slovakia-based vocalist Alan Grnja joined, the band kept touring and writing, culminating in the mid-2017 EP Tsukuyomi.

They signed with Unique Leader in 2018 and began preparing their debut album. Yetgin produced and recorded Tyrannotophia, which arrived in 2019 and intensified their already extreme approach. Planned tours were derailed by the COVID-19 pandemic, prompting the members to channel the downtime into a series of EPs that expanded the fictional universe introduced on their first album. Dawn of Corruption emerged in 2020 and Dusk of Anguish followed in early 2021. Those EPs, along with additional tracks, supplied the foundation for the 19-song sophomore album Aeons of Oblivion, released in mid-2021.

Once live shows resumed, the rescheduled dates promoted the second album rather than the debut. Troust and Ramharakh departed, with Jan Mato taking over drums and Vladimir Golic handling guitar. Distant then performed sold-out concerts throughout Europe and the U.K. before turning to their third album. Century Media issued Heritage in early 2023, after which the band toured the U.S., Europe, and the U.K. In late 2023 Jan Mato exited and Rene Gerbrandij assumed drumming duties for live performances.
