Biography
Rooted in the traditions of Southern rock and broader hard-rock sounds, the Denton, Texas, trio Dixie Witch formed in 1999 with Trinidad Leal on drums and vocals, Clayton Mills on guitar, and Curt Christensen on bass. The group self-produced its debut album, Into the Sun, for the Texas label Brainticket Records, which issued the record in summer 2001. Following extensive road work that included dates supporting Alabama Thunder Pussy, the band moved to Detroit’s Small Stone Records and delivered its sophomore effort, One Bird, Two Stones, in 2003. Smoke & Mirrors appeared as the third album in 2006; afterward the musicians crisscrossed the United States, performing multiple times at the SXSW music conference and the Emissions from the Monolith festival, and made their first journey to Europe. In 2009 they added guitarist Joshua “JT” Todd Smith, and after relocating their base to Austin, Texas, the group returned to Small Stone for the 2011 release Let it Roll.
