Biography
Nearly three decades into an impressively productive run, the German electronic indie duo Donna Regina have cultivated an unmistakable, frequently hypnotic style that blends live instruments with subdued electronic beats and keyboard textures. Built around the airy, multilingual singing of Regina Janssen alongside her spouse Günther Janssen, who handles production and plays multiple instruments, the pair’s initial Strange Ways releases from the early 1990s drew comparisons to Saint Etienne and One Dove. Over time they forged their own unhurried aesthetic across a quietly compelling catalog issued exclusively on Karaoke Kalk from 1999 onward, with notable entries including the 2010 album The Decline of Female Happiness and 2014’s Holding the Mirror for Sophia Loren. Although most of their work has been conceived for intimate listening, Donna Regina have kept ties to club culture through reinterpretations by Matthew Herbert, Mouse on Mars, Michael Mayer, and Isolée.
The duo came together in Cologne in 1990 and introduced themselves with Lazing Away in 1992, their sole outing on the Our Choice imprint. During the following six years they issued four additional full-lengths on Strange Ways Records, building listeners across Europe and Japan, where they first performed live in 1996. After Planet Me appeared in 1998 they parted ways with Strange Ways and launched an enduring association with Karaoke Kalk; starting with A Quiet Week in the House in 1999 they refined their signature approach through a consistent sequence of albums such as Northern Classic (2002), Late (2003), Slow Killer (2005), and More (2007). Two 2004 compilations collected highlights from separate eras: The Early Years, issued by Poland’s Gusstaff label, and A Collection of Little Secrets, released by France’s Tricatel.
By the time of The Decline of Female Happiness in 2010, Donna Regina’s music had evolved into a more acoustic hybrid, incorporating guitar and mandolin accents plus real percussion, even while many listeners still classified them as electronic. Regina had previously delivered nearly all lyrics in English, yet Holding the Mirror for Sophia Loren marked a shift toward multiple languages with several French- and Spanish-language pieces. In 2015 a tribute project titled Dis Cover - Donna Regina as Recorded By presented reworkings by Mouse on Mars, Console, Bertrand Burgalat, and additional artists. Transient, their 2019 return, contained just four English tracks, the remainder performed in German and French.
