Biography
Drayton Farley, an Alabama-based songwriter rooted in Americana, specializes in earthy narratives drawn from everyday blue-collar existence and marked by sharp, relatable detail. He grew up in the modest community of Woodstock, where he issued his first independent track, “Trouble in the Pines,” in 2018. Two years later he folded a pair of self-released EPs into the album Hargrove & Sweet Summer Sadness. On the follow-up A Hard Life, released in 2021, Farley tightened his spare arrangements and plainspoken delivery, which echo the country-leaning work of Jason Isbell, Sturgill Simpson, and Tyler Childers. The fourteen songs were tracked at home on his Martin acoustic in the hours before night shifts at a Mercedes Benz plant. Americana and country listeners responded strongly, allowing Farley to quit the factory job by year’s end and share bills with Zach Bryan and Arlo McKinley. For his third album, Twenty on High, he formed a full band. Jason Isbell guitarist Sadler Vaden produced the sessions, which included 400 Unit bassist Jimbo Hart and drummer Chad Gamble, and the record arrived in 2023.
