Biography
Dumb emerged from Canada as a punk rock outfit determined not to match their moniker. Their music blends jagged guitar lines and splintered beats with resilient yet demanding tunes, while the words deliver mordant humor alongside incisive commentary. The quartet exploded from Vancouver’s indie scene through a burst of activity, putting out three EPs and two albums from 2015 into 2016. Praise greeted the surf-flavored concept record Beach Church as well as the tuneful yet unyielding EP 5$ or Free, prompting Mint Records to sign the band and release Seeing Green in 2018. Club Nites, issued the following year, tightened their raw yet kinetic approach, and Pray 4 Tomorrow, which arrived in 2022, incorporated brass flourishes.
Guitarist and vocalist Franco Rossino formed Dumb in Vancouver, British Columbia, alongside guitarist Nick Short, bassist Shelby Vredik, and drummer Pipé Morelli. Regular local performances began soon after the 2015 launch, leading to the self-released EP Friendship several months later. Vredik then exited to explore other paths, so Brett Barmby stepped in for the year’s second EP, Tulips. Once Barmby departed for graduate studies, Rossino’s brother Gavin Ray assumed bass duties for the nine-song Beach Church, an exercise in surf influences that surfaced in February 2016.
The musicians quickly returned to the studio, yielding Mustang Law—an October 2016 LP that steered them back toward arty punk. Ray subsequently left to attend college, prompting Rossino to tell journalist Judah Schulte, “Grad school kept stealing our bassists.” Vredik came back to Vancouver and rejoined, restoring the original lineup for the six-song EP 5$ or Free, which appeared in December 2016. With personnel stabilized, the group focused on live shows throughout 2017, appearing frequently in Vancouver while completing three separate tours. Mint Records, one of Canada’s leading independent labels, announced the signing in April 2018, and Seeing Green followed two months later; the title reflected preoccupations with money, envy, and inexperience. Club Nites, another Mint release from June 2019, delivered another intense batch the band characterized as “a collection of narratives drawn from the nightlife ecosystem.”
In 2021 Dumb contributed “Pizza Slice” to a split single with fellow Vancouver act Tough Age, whose side featured “Giuseppe Pizzeria”; the 7-inch vinyl came packaged with an eight-page comic illustrated by Cole Pauls. The third studio album, Pray 4 Tomorrow, emerged in November 2022. Alongside the band’s characteristically fractured guitar-driven sound, several cuts featured trumpet from Kristy-Lee Audette, whose credits include performances with Sloan and Adele.
