What began as a dance-focused project called the Eden Project evolved into a fresh creative path for Irish singer/songwriter Jonathon Ng, who adopted the EDEN name in the second half of the 2010s to explore song-driven indie electronic music. His 2018 album Vertigo brought widespread praise alongside notable chart performance across the Atlantic, while the follow-up LP No Future reached number 26 on the Billboard 200 in 2020. EDEN resurfaced in 2022 with ICYMI, a reflective full-length steeped in ideas of loss and transience. A highly active 2024 produced several singles plus the EP Friday Night Song.

After issuing Final Call as the Eden Project in 2014, Ng adopted the EDEN moniker and simultaneously altered his sonic approach. The classically trained artist, who as a teenager abandoned school band and orchestra to master additional instruments, started weaving in more organic elements and revealed this new style on the 2015 End Credits EP via Seeking Blue Records/MCMXCV. Where the Eden Project had expressed Ng’s affinity for EDM, the newer work evoked atmospheric textures akin to those of Crywolf or M83. Following an early-2016 digital reinterpretation of Michael Jackson’s “Billie Jean,” EDEN delivered the driving single “Sex,” then released the EP I Think You Think Too Much of Me later in the year.

Extensive touring filled much of 2017 ahead of “Start//End,” the opening single from his first proper studio album. Vertigo appeared in early 2018 and was supported by a run of dates with Verite. In April 2019 EDEN offered the single “909” and continued teasing tracks from his next album throughout the remainder of the year. The dreamy, introspective No Future surfaced in February 2020 as a 19-track set containing several short interludes linking its longer pieces; the project achieved strong North American chart placement, though a major tour had to be scrapped because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

During the first half of 2022, EDEN rolled out anxious, glitch-laden singles such as “Modern Warfare” and “Sci-Fi,” both of which appeared on his third album ICYMI (In Case You Missed It), issued that September. He devoted much of the following year to new material and returned in April 2024 with the paired singles “Cant” and “The Love U Need,” collected under the title (2019)(2022). Work on a fresh EP continued with tracks including “Zzz” and “5ever,” which surfaced together on Friday Night Song when it arrived in September.
