Electribe 101, a British dance outfit, fused deep house with synth pop in a polished, intense manner, highlighting the emotive singing and introspective words from Billie Ray Martin, who hailed from Germany. Their sole studio effort, Electribal Memories from 1990, preceded their dissolution, after which Martin pursued a thriving individual path as her former colleagues established the dub-infused, relaxed-tempo ensemble Groove Corporation. In 2022, Electribal Soul emerged as the long-unreleased follow-up full-length, followed by a lavish reissue of their debut in 2024 via Edsel Records.

Born in Hamburg, Billie Ray Martin relocated to Berlin during the initial 1980s phase and led the 11-piece soul-revival outfit Billie and the Deep. Her subsequent move to London prompted an advertisement in Melody Maker seeking musical partners, leading to encounters with Birmingham natives Brian Nordhoff, Joe Stevens, Les Fleming, and Roberto Cimarosti. The collective issued the evocative 1988 track "Talking with Myself," coinciding with Martin's guest spots on S'Express' 1989 debut Original Soundtrack. Under manager Tom Watkins, the group secured a Mercury contract, resulting in a promotional 12" of "Lipstick on My Lover," though their official second single became "Tell Me When the Fever Ended," achieving U.K. Top 40 status. Mercury then revived "Talking with Myself" at the start of 1990, attaining number 23 domestically and entering the U.S. dance Top Ten. Electribal Memories followed, climbing to number 26 in Britain, and the band supported Depeche Mode during the World Violation Tour.

Despite efforts toward a sophomore album, Electribe 101 faced release from their label in 1991. Further attempts at material culminated in a 1992 split. The bulk of the members formed Groove Corporation, channeling dub elements, and put out singles with Bim Sherman and Original Rockers prior to inking with 6 x 6 Records for their 1995 debut Co-Operation. Concurrently, Martin ventured solo, teaming with Spooky for a rendition of Throbbing Gristle's "Persuasion," and delivering the 1993 EP 4 Ambient Tales through Apollo, an R&S imprint, which included contributions from pedal steel guitarist B.J. Cole and the Grid. Tracks slated for the abandoned second Electribe project found new life on both Martin’s and Groove Corporation’s inaugural albums. Martin's energetic single "Your Loving Arms" achieved global success, while Deadline for My Memories, produced in part by the Grid and BT, surfaced in Europe during late 1995 before worldwide distribution the next year. "Talking with Myself" persisted as a Balearic dance classic, prompting 1998 remixes alongside another Electribal Memories reissue.

Electribe 101 gradually unveiled previously unheard recordings. The John Peel Session, a three-track EP captured for the renowned broadcaster’s BBC program back in 1989, saw release in 2011. The 2021 single "Heading for the Night" arrived with multiple versions remixed by Chicago house originator Frankie Knuckles. Electribal Soul, captured across 1991 and 1992 before the breakup, appeared in 2022. Edsel Records provided a vinyl pressing and expanded four-CD treatment of Electribal Memories in 2024.
