Black Box spearheaded Italy’s house music surge during the closing years of the 1980s. The core lineup consisted of club DJ Daniele Davoli, computer specialist Mirko Limoni, and classically trained clarinetist Valeric Semplici, three studio players who operated together under the production banner Groove Groove Melody. Widely regarded as among the most prolific figures in Italian dance music, the team oversaw dozens of singles annually during their busiest period. In 1989 they enlisted model Katrin, born Catherine Quinol, to front the project Black Box, which launched with the single “Ride on Time.” The track dominated domestic clubs before reaching the summit of the British pop charts, where it held the number-one position for six straight weeks amid backlash over its uncredited sampling of Loleatta Holloway’s disco cut “Love Sensation.” A follow-up pressing instead incorporated uncredited vocals from Heather Small. Subsequent releases included “I Don’t Know Anybody Else,” which also cracked the U.S. Top Ten, and “Everybody Everybody,” featuring lead vocals by Martha Wash. Their first full-length album, Dreamland, appeared in 1990 and achieved strong sales. The group resurfaced in 1991 with “Strike It Up,” another U.S. Top Ten hit, alongside the compilation Mixed Up! Meanwhile Groove Groove Melody continued to place material under alternate names such as Starlight on “Numero Uno” and Mixmaster on “Grand Piano.” Following an extended break, Black Box issued Positive Vibration in 1995, yet the album attracted minimal attention. Davoli sustained a high-profile career as a DJ while continuing to produce and remix tracks under various pseudonyms.
