Among the wave of Dutch dance acts that dominated European clubs and charts throughout the 1990s, the techno outfit 2 Brothers on the 4th Floor stood alongside compatriots such as 2 Unlimited. Bobby and Martin Boer launched their songwriting partnership from a bedroom studio, securing their first chart entry in 1990 through the single "Can't Help Myself." After gaining initial spins on Dutch radio, the track spread into a continental success. The brothers then brought in rapper Da Smooth Baron MC together with vocalists Peggy "The Duchess" and Gale Robinson, issuing "Turn Da Music" the next year under the 2 Brothers on the 4th Floor name.

Limited traction from that follow-up prompted Bobby and Martin to suspend the project during 1992-1993, channeling their efforts instead into remix duties at Dancability Productions for Becky Bell and Twenty 4 Seven. Reconvening the group by 1994, they added rapper D-Rock and vocalist Des'Ray. Their comeback single "Never Alone" registered as a gold-certified Dutch hit, while the next release, "Dreams," debuted at number one and gave rise to the band's self-titled debut album. Subsequent singles "Fly (Trough the Starry Night)," "Come Take My Hand," and "Fairytales" also registered strongly across Europe. The second album, titled 2, arrived in late 1996 and was accompanied by several megamix editions.
