European house outfit Double You? first attracted widespread attention in the early 90s, chiefly because of a very public dispute that erupted between their label ZYX Records and Network Records. Network had sought permission to license the act’s take on KC And The Sunshine Band’s “Please Don’t Go,” yet those requests were turned down. In response, Network instead commissioned KWS to cut its own rendition, which promptly logged five weeks at number 1 on the UK charts in 1992. Double You?’s manager Robertson Zanetti suffered a collapse brought on by nervous exhaustion amid the ensuing legal battle. Even so, the group pressed ahead in the studio and registered modest returns with their cover of “Run To Me.” The 1994 single “What’s Up” caught observers off guard, since many had already written the project off, while the uninspired “Hot Stuff” that followed in 1995 nevertheless underscored Double You?’s ongoing foothold in the rudimentary house-cover niche.
