Vocalist Eugenia León first surfaced in 1983 as an unknown voice and has since become a defining figure in Mexican culture. Born in Mexico City, she launched her professional path in the 1970s by joining ensembles that specialized in nueva canción and politically charged material, repertoire that captured the outlook of students and young adults and resonated widely across Latin America. By 1982 she had stepped forward as a solo performer, interpreting material from songwriters of her own generation including Marcia Alejandro, Pepe Elorza, and Jaime Lopez. A decisive rise in recognition occurred in 1985 when she secured victory for Mexico at the OTI Festival in Sevilla just two days after a devastating earthquake struck her native city. Deeply moved herself, León nevertheless supplied her compatriots with a moment of triumph precisely when it was most needed. Growing acclaim prompted a steady stream of releases, with nearly one new album appearing each year from her 1983 debut through 2000. Her stature as a Latin American musical icon carried her to international stages, where she appeared alongside figures such as Lola Beltrán, Willie Colón, José José, and Mercedes Sosa. In 2007 she issued her twenty-second original album, Pasional, which maintained a prolonged position on Mexican charts by remaining in the Top 40 for months after its release.
