Luz Casal first entered recording studios under her complete name and went on to earn recognition as Spain’s foremost female rock and pop vocalist after launching her career in 1980 via the hit single “El Ascensor.” Earlier she had performed with the exploitation rock outfit the Fannys. That single secured an ample production budget for her self-titled debut album, tracked across Madrid, Brussels, and Amsterdam in 1982. The resulting acclaim positioned her as a major concert draw across Europe, a status underscored by a well-received Czechoslovakian tour in 1985. A substantial Latin American trek followed, where her audience proved equally devoted. Further commercially robust albums appeared through the remainder of the decade, though none replicated the debut’s breakthrough force; her global visibility nevertheless climbed once more during the 1990s. She shared the stage with U2, Sting, and Bruce Springsteen at the 1991 Amnesty International Concert staged in Chile, while A Contraluz sold over five hundred thousand copies inside Spain that same year. During the subsequent three-year gap preceding Como La Flor Prometida, she undertook extensive performances throughout Japan, Europe, and Latin America. Another major commercial triumph kept her firmly in the Spanish spotlight, aided by the candid remarks she regularly offered interviewers.
